I am looking for a new rear tire for my bike. Currently I am running on a Metzler M3 which I liked but I want to go to a better possibly more aggressive tire. I have been looking at the Michelin Pilot Power 2 CT and Pilot Power or a Pirelli Diablo Corsa III. I like to ride pretty hard and aggressive through the turns but I also use my bike to travel to work so I sometime wear a flat spot pretty fast. But when I am able to hit the turn I can remove some of my flat spot. My main concern is grip through the turns, I can deal with a flat spot, and I have narrowed my choices down to the 2CT or Corsa III. If I need to I would bump to a the Pilot Power. What are your guys recommendations?

I have been happy with my 2CT. I know the Corsa III is very popular too. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

No complaints from my Corsa III's.....other than they wear quickly.

I also had no complaints with the regular Pilot Power.  Loved them.

What kind of riding do you do? Tight, technical or uber-sweepers?

Also, are you able to tell if your rear is pushing out (and how comfortable are you with that)?

I posted this in the wrenching one for you too...I used the M3 front and Z3 roadtec rear combo on my TLR before.  It worked well.  I used it at Deal's Gap last year.  I even used it at a track day at Pocono before I bought a track bike.  JiT, craigman, and I (I only use a sport touring rear tire) all use sport touring tires on fast bikes.  We all corner pretty quick and commute.

If you plan on using the bike on the track, I wouldn't recommend them to you.  Actually if it were raining during the track day, they might be better than DOT tires.

From my experience, a sport touring rear tire can get about as much life as a supersport front.

If you don't want to go with a sport touring tire, any of the supersport tires are great.  Everyone has their own personal preference and swear that they are better than others.  I would try to go with something with multiple compounds like the Diablo Corsa III's, Pilot Power 2CT, Bridgestone BT-016.  I don't know squat about continentals, avons, or any other brands.

Dave can hook you up on sweet deals on the Pirelli DCIII's.

aceyx I try to hit them all because up around State College we pretty much have them all. My favorite are the sweepers like Rt 144 but I also love Rt 350 and  Rt 45. And to be honest I don't think I can tell if my rear tire is pushing at all. freezer16801 for track days I use power race front and rear. I am trying those out to see how the feel and grip. I am also going to see what the Bridgestone BT-002 feel like on the track when I get the chance. My friend who races for WERA loved both power races and the BT-002. I am going to try them out and see what they feel like for me.

If you're not pushing your rear either tire should do. Really, the technology is so advanced and close that it comes down to a matter of minute preference.

2CT will give you more confidence if you keep a high corner speed but that's not to say they stick better, you'll just feel more planted.

DCIII is great for throttling out of turns because they'll tell you when you're on the edge of traction and give you a chance to come back; the 2CT kind of gets squirrely and lets go.

A few years ago Pirelli wanted some of Metzler's technology, so they did what any large company would do and bought them out.

The tires are now very similar but Pirelli obviously reserved the "best" for their own brand. That's not to say that they turned Metzler to crap but the Pirelli stuff is always +1 at every level.

However, that +1 (like all tires in a range) is a matter of preference. Depending on the way you ride and what you're comfortable with that might actually be a -1.

So now it's a matter of marketing, they are very similar tires otherwise. I want to say this happened back in '05?
